Bárbara Aurell: “Fabrics are the skin of a project”

Bárbara Aurell celebrates Movimiento nº100 with Lamadrid fabrics.

An interior designer by training and vocation, Bárbara Aurell is the creative mind behind Espacio en Blanco, a Barcelona-based studio with a very personal take on interior design. Her philosophy focuses on accompanying people’s lives through spaces, always seeking light, calm, and the beauty of what is essential. To this vision she adds an artistic touch to every project, born from her passion for art, turning each proposal into an aesthetic and sensory experience.

Her work has been featured in leading publications such as AD España, Elle Decor, Arquitectura y Diseño, and Manera, establishing her as a prominent voice in the current Spanish interior design scene.

For years, Bárbara has maintained a close relationship with Güell Lamadrid, remaining a loyal interior designer to the brand and an advocate of the fundamental role fabrics play in any project. Our latest collaboration was during the Movimiento en Blanco nº100 event, held last September 18 in Barcelona. For this very special milestone, Bárbara trusted our fabrics to create a spectacular sensory installation where textures engaged in dialogue with art.

When you start a project, you usually ask your clients: “How do you want to live?” Tell us, Bárbara, how do you want to live?

I want to live surrounded by calm and beauty. With spaces that allow me to think big, but also to pause and enjoy the simple things: a coffee, a ray of sunlight coming through the window, a long conversation, good music, art. For me, living well means feeling at ease in every detail and being surrounded by the people I love.

What role do textiles play in your projects?

Textiles are what wrap a space. They bring warmth, color, texture, even movement. A curtain, a sofa, a cushion, upholstering a wall… they can completely change the way you experience a room. They’re what transform a project into something livable and approachable. Into something truly pleasurable.

“Fabrics are the skin of a project. They dress the architecture, but above all, they make it approachable and human.”

If you weren’t an interior designer, what would you have done?

Probably something related to art. I’m passionate about it, and every day I learn to let my gaze go further. I love observing, listening, understanding. I could have been an exhibition curator, but also a cook: in both cases it’s about blending ingredients with care to create an experience and live it intensely.

Do you have any creative quirks or rituals before starting a new project?

Yes: I need to pause. To gift myself to that project and to the people who will enjoy it, and to imagine how that place will be lived in. I don’t start with the floor plan, I start with the feeling. Then comes the rest: forms, light, flow, materials… ending with textures, colors, and always a touch of art.

Whose home would you like to design?

For someone who values the same things I do: art, simplicity, a well-lived life… someone genuine. More than a name, I’m drawn to the kind of person who enjoys their home as their own universe. Someone who is happy in that space and lives the life they want to live.

Plain or patterned fabric?

It depends. Plain fabrics bring calm, patterns add emphasis. But I always look for balance: a space needs silences and also surprises. I like to be a little eclectic and mix, so I’d go with both versions.

“Plain fabric envelops you, patterned fabric awakens you. Together they create perfect harmony.“

What is the most fun or unexpected thing that has happened to you while working with a client?

Every project has a funny story behind it. Each one has its own notebook, where people write their “How do you want to live?” That notebook hides many secrets, unconfessable intimacies, and unexpected situations… In the end, when you’re passionate, you can find something amusing in everything.
