The word fado comes from the Latin ‘fatum’ which means ‘destiny’. And the thing is that if this music has something characteristic, it is its melancholic and nostalgic overtones; the most sung songs are the little stories of daily life in humble neighbourhoods, full of fatalism and frustration.

O Fado, a painting by José Malhoa (1855-1933) is considered an icon of naturalism in Portuguese painting. It is an allegory to fado and a tribute to the bohemian and marginal condition of a certain Lisbon society at the beginning of the 20th century. Its colors remind us of the Fado collection by Güell Lamadrid.

The history of fado is not very defined. It is believed to be almost 200 years old. It is a musical genre that suffered many influences, especially from Brazil and Africa, since the Portuguese were there and there was a lot of exchange between cultures. It is usually sung by one person, accompanied by the “viola” and the Portuguese guitar.

Fado, oil by Mário Couto.

Fado is the urban song of Lisbon, it emerged in the historic neighbourhoods of the city and in popular contexts. It was sung by ordinary people and even, mainly, by marginal people. It was sung spontaneously, in open or closed spaces and the lyrics portrayed their experiences, through the use of jargon or slang.

Amália Rodrigues, fados singer and Portuguese actress.

Amália Rodrigues (1920-1999), considered the artistic ambassador of Portugal, describes fado like this: «Fado is a very mysterious thing, you have to feel it and you have to be born with the anguished side of people, to feel like someone who does not have no ambitions, no wishes.
